Compare the spellings at the ends of why, by, and very

The words why and by both end with y spelling the long i sound. In why, that ending follows wh; in by, it follows b. The final y in the two-syllable word very spells a different vowel sound, the long e sound.

Sort the vowel patterns

The words how and about use different two-letter spellings for the same vowel sound: ow in how and ou in about. The word good also has a two-letter vowel spelling, oo, but it needs its own sound and spelling connection.

In make and home, silent e helps the earlier vowel say its name. The short words get and her use familiar vowel-and-consonant patterns. The word into can be held in two parts, in and to, which keeps all four letters in order.
