The short “i” sound is the vowel sound heard in the middle of pig, sit, and win — distinct from the short “a” sound just practiced. After Short A, this list gives a child a second single vowel sound to hear and spell with the same calm, steady approach.

How to practice this list
Say a word without showing it. Have your child repeat it, separate its sounds, write the letters—p-i-g for pig—and then check the written word. After a few words, mix them with one or two familiar Short A words so the vowel must be chosen by listening.
Keep an ear out for short e replacing short i, such as peg for pig. That vowel choice shows where to focus; a missing or changed consonant needs attention to the beginning or ending instead. Say two words such as pig and peg naturally rather than exaggerating them, and let the child compare the middle sounds before trying again.
When a child can spell these words in mixed order with growing independence, preserve i while the consonants change, and fix an occasional vowel error after comparison, they’re ready for Kindergarten Short O Words.
