Short U Words
Eight simple words built around the short "u" sound — bug, rug, sun, run, nut, cut, cup, and fun — continuing the kindergarten spelling progression one vowel at a time.
These spelling words are a good fit for students who...
- can spell familiar words with short a, i, and o
- can hear the short u sound in the middle of “run” or “cup”
- try a new short u word by sounding it out, even if the vowel sometimes comes out as a, i, or o

Short U is the fourth single-vowel lesson in this progression, following Short O. You can hear the target vowel in the middle of bug, sun, and cup; model it naturally because vowel pronunciation varies across accents and dialects.
All eight words here — bug, rug, sun, run, nut, cut, cup, and fun — follow the same one-sound-per-letter pattern already practiced in Short A and Short I. The vowel to listen for carefully here is short O: it’s the closest-sounding neighbor in this sequence, and a child who just spent time on dog and hot can sometimes slip and read or write a short “u” word as though it rhymed with a short “o” one.
How to practice this list
Say a word without showing it, have your child repeat and stretch its three sounds, write the letters, and check the middle vowel. If the child hesitates, compare a Short U word with a clearly different familiar Short O word in your own pronunciation, then ask which one matches. A changed consonant calls for listening to the edge of the word; writing o in the middle calls for another comparison of the vowel sounds.
When a child can spell the words in mixed order, preserve u as the consonants change, and correct an occasional vowel confusion after comparison, they’re ready for Kindergarten Short E Words.
