What to notice when spelling these words
Build with recognizable word parts
The compound someone joins some and one without changing either spelling. Several other words can be kept in manageable parts: un + til in until, al + most in almost, and the two spoken syllables in began and never.
Notice consonants beside the vowels
The short vowel words small and off end with doubled consonants. In contrast, own and told use the vowel spellings ow and o before their final consonants. Three words need more focused attention: answer keeps a silent letter, large ends in soft g, and learn uses the written vowel chunk ear.
