What to notice when spelling these words

The words high and light share igh for the long i sound; light adds l before that team and t after it. In only, the opening word on remains visible, followed by ly. The familiar endings er in other and together can also help preserve their final letters.

Keep the vowel teams distinct

Several long vowel sounds use different teams in this set: ay ends say, while ee ends three. The oo in took spells the same vowel sound heard in book, not the one in room. Came follows the silent-e pattern, and kind uses i for its long sound before nd. The notes focus on vowels and chunks that are less clear from pronunciation alone.

young

In young, the vowel sound heard in sun is spelled ou. Keep ou before the final ng chunk: y-o-u-n-g.

other

The first vowel sound in other is spelled with o. After th, the word ends with the r-controlled er chunk: o-t-h-e-r.

Spell together in the written chunks to, get, and her. Keeping those chunks in order protects the single g and the ending er: t-o-g-e-t-h-e-r.
