What to notice when spelling these words

Use the shared er ending

Teacher, farmer, and baker all end in er. Their beginnings preserve useful spellings from teach, farm, and bake: the vowel team ea, the r-controlled ar, and the silent-e spelling in bake before the final e is dropped to add er.

Build the compound firefighter

Spell firefighter by joining fire + fighter. Inside fighter, the word fight keeps its igh spelling before er is added. Building the two meaningful parts keeps all eleven letters in order.

Break longer words into syllables

Use spoken and written parts for doc-tor, den-tist, and li-brar-i-an. The endings differ: doctor ends in tor, dentist ends in tist, and librarian ends in ian. The short word nurse has the r-controlled spelling ur and a final silent e.

Notes for particular words

librarian

Say librarian in four parts: li-brar-i-an. Keep br together in the second part and finish with ian.
