What to notice when spelling these words
Notice doubled consonants and longer endings
Penny has two ns before its final y, and dollar has two ls. The longer words can also be held in parts: nick-el, quar-ter, and dol-lar. In quarter and dollar, the endings er and ar are r-controlled spellings.
Compare the vowel spellings
The silent e in dime helps mark its long i sound. The vowel team oi spells the middle sound in coin, while change uses a before n and the consonant team ch at the beginning.
