What to notice when spelling these words

Occupation names carry real spelling weight once a base word picks up a suffix — scientist, photographer, journalist — and this eight-word set uses that join, plus a few unexpected ch sounds, as its main practice.

Build words from recognizable bases

Journalist is journal + ist, and photographer is photograph + er. Both bases remain complete when the suffix is added. Scientist changes at the join: adding ist to science drops the final e. Checking the base first secures most of each longer spelling.

Compare the spellings with ch

The letters ch occur in architect, mechanic, and chef, but they do not represent the same sound in all three words. In architect and mechanic, ch represents the sound commonly spelled k; in chef, it represents the sound commonly spelled sh. The stable written pair ch must stay attached to each word despite that sound contrast.

Organize the remaining longer words

Hold engineer as the written parts en-gi-neer, preserving the final eer. In plumber, begin with plumb and add er so the less-clearly-heard b remains visible. The written parts ar-chi-tect and me-chan-ic provide separate letter-order checks for two other multisyllabic words.

Notes for particular words

scientist

Scientist is built from science + ist. The final e in science is dropped before ist is added, but the spelling sci remains at the beginning.

plumber

Plumber keeps the b in its base, plumb, even though the b is not usually heard. Hold plumb before adding er.
