4th Grade Solar System Spelling Words

Astronaut, asteroid, meteor — three space words with three different vowel sequences to keep straight, which is the real work behind this ten-word set, not a lesson in astronomy.

Organize the longest words

Use syllables to hold astronaut as as-tro-naut and satellite as sat-el-lite. The shorter asteroid can be organized as as-ter-oid. These divisions keep the letter order visible, especially where astronaut ends in naut, satellite has doubled l, and asteroid ends in oid.

Compare internal vowel sequences

Three words have memorable two-vowel sequences: astronaut contains au, asteroid contains oi, and meteor contains eo. They occur in different positions, so attach each sequence to its whole word rather than treating them as interchangeable spellings. Eclipse presents a different check: it begins and ends with e.

Use stable chunks in the remaining words

Planet, orbit, and comet each have two syllables. Planet and comet share the final chunk et, while orbit ends in it. Gravity and galaxy both begin with g and end in y, but their middles separate them: grav-i-ty and gal-ax-y. Comparing the shared frame with the different internal letters prevents the two spellings from blending together.
