What to notice when spelling these words

Start with the sounds you can hear

Red has three letters for its three sounds. In black, listen for both b and l at the start and keep ck together at the end. In pink, listen all the way through the ending nk.

Notice the vowel chunks in four words

The middle of green uses ee. Blue ends in ue, and brown uses ow. In white, the final e works with i to spell the long i sound. Remembering each vowel chunk reduces how many letters you need to work out one at a time.

Notes for particular words

yellow

Say yellow in two parts: yel-low. Remember the two l letters in the middle, then finish with ow: y-e-l-l-o-w.
