What to notice when spelling these words

Compare the shortest shape words

The words star and heart both end in r followed by t, but their vowel spellings differ: star has ar, while heart has ear. In square, the final silent e is part of the are ending.

Break longer words into spoken parts

Listen for two parts in circle, oval, and diamond. The words triangle and rectangle each have three spoken parts. Saying a longer word slowly helps keep its middle letters in order.

Keep the shared ending in two words

The words triangle and rectangle share the written ending angle. Find and spell that same five-letter chunk in both words, then check the different beginning.

Notes for particular words

heart

The word heart uses the written chunk ear before its final t. This vowel spelling must be remembered as part of the word.
