What to notice when spelling these words

Compare beginning and ending consonants

The consonant team sh begins both shirt and shoes. At the ends of words, listen for the blends in shirt and pants and the final consonants in hat and jacket.

Notice five plural endings

The words pants, shoes, socks, mittens, and boots end in s. In pants, the letters nt come before the final s. Keep the whole ending in view so that none of its three consonants is dropped.

Use vowel spellings and doubled letters

The vowel team oo spells the vowel sound in boots. The two-syllable words jacket and mittens can be spelled one spoken part at a time; mittens needs two ts in the middle.

Notes for particular words

shoes

The word shoes begins with sh, uses oe for its vowel spelling, and ends with s.
