What to notice when spelling these words
Seven words end in y
The final y in sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, snowy, stormy, and foggy spells the long e sound. Say the shorter word first—sun, rain, cloud, wind, snow, storm, or fog—and then add y. Keeping that first word in mind makes the longer spelling easier to retrieve.
Double the last consonant in two words
The short vowel in sun is followed by one final consonant, so sunny has two ns. The same change turns fog into foggy with two gs. The other -y words in this list do not double their final consonant.
Compare the vowel spellings
