What to notice when spelling these words

Begin with two short words

Mom and dad each have three sounds and three letters. Listen for the short vowel in the middle, then check that the first and last letters match the beginning and ending sounds.

Compare sister and brother

Both words end with the letters er. Say each in two parts—sis-ter and broth-er—and keep the ending the same. At the start of brother, write br, then use th in the middle.

Build longer words from familiar parts

Grandma and grandpa share the complete written part grand. Add ma or pa to finish the intended word. Baby and family both finish with y spelling the long e sound; in baby, say ba-by to hear the two parts.
